Eleven - Vids

Videos

Dada and Surrealism, and The Impact of Cubism.

1. Explain why you selected each of the TWO videos you choose from the selection listed above.

I selected these two videos because when I initially started pursuing art more, it was in large part due to the influence of Dada artists. The Dadas and that movement were radical and beautiful at all the same time, which is a juxtaposition I thoroughly enjoy. Surrealism is a close movement to Dada, and Cubism is a style that came close prior to Dada, so by association, I also have a fondness for these styles as well.

Key concepts to the Dada and Surrealism covered the tumourous period that leads to the development of art movements. After Cubism and Futurism, WW1 began, and Dada erupted as a result in stark retaliation. This period discussed through the artistic careers of artists Kurt Schwitters, Hanna Höch, George Grosz, Joán Miró.

4. What is your opinion of the films? How do they add depth to the understanding of the readings and art concepts?

I enjoyed the films, they focused primarily through the masters of their respected movements, which I thought a nice way of seeing history and it's direct impact upon the art made during these times. Given how chaotic this time frame was in history, it's not surprising the effect it had on artists. The book very consicly touches on tehese period in history, and th pinicle artists at play during these times.
