7 - Vids

Prairie Style (Frank Lloyd Wright)
Architecture: The Science of Design
Frank Gehry: Architecture as Art
Last Call for Planet Earth: Sustainable Development and Architecture

1. For each video list/discuss the key concepts you learned.

The first vid I selected was "Architecture: The Science of Design," which covers the practical components to creating a building. How one goes about designing with the environmental elements in mind, or how the building is intended to be used, and what designs cater to that, but also to the buildings abiliy to last. The other vid I picked is "Last Call for Planet Earth: Sustainable Development and Architecture." The vid covers the crossroads that is architecture and green/eco-friendly concepts, and the immense importance to pursuing these kinds of buildings and concepts going forward for all civilizations. The overall theme both this vids shared was dealing with architecture and design principles.

2. How do the videos relate to the readings in the text?

While the book covers the artistic areas around architecture, and ventures outside that bubble a bit, these videos push into that area more. Covering the scientific and practical application of architecture within our world.

3. What is your opinion of the films? How do they add depth to understanding of Architecture?

Both films were very interesting, I enjoy the intersection of art and science, which these vids covered. I found myself especially interested in the sustainability vid because that feels like an extremely important topic to consider going forward in all aspects of life. For as much as I like to think I consider sustainable options, I hadn't really ever thought about buildings and how their design can be better fitted to eco-friendly ways. I've thought about the inside of buildings, like having efficient appliances, and things like that. So that was an interesting point introduced to me.

4. Why did you choose the films that you watched?

I chose these vids because they seemed the most scientific, which is an area that interests me. Plus, the idea of sustainability is something I like to learn more about in all it's forms.
